With all of Logic’s inredible instruments, producers often rely on the sound of the samples right out of the box, here’s how to make them more interesting.

What I like about GrungeCake (besides their name) is their motto: “A collection of empirical stories and honest reviews, targeting emerging and popular commodities.” This site is filled with ways to highlight the arts in every manner, and they do this through reviews, features, news, and streams — anything to tell the stories of the artists who frequent their pages.

Eric Dickstein is a NYC-born musician, currently studying at Georgetown University. He plays keys, sings, and writes music for the soul-pop group Melt. Eric is also the Associate Editor of The 11 Contracts That Every Artist, Songwriter, and Producer Should Know by Steve Gordon, a book on how to navigate contracts in the music industry.
Lyrically, the verse “back ends” coalesce in a cool way, using similar lines and then the same lines — which you could call lazy, but I don’t think you should be smarmy about anything in pop that you don’t see too often. Good going, whichever one of you five Maroony guys crafted this cool little “words-zipper.” My money’s on the tall Gump-cut guy, he seems like he’s going places — he must be a solid dude for all these women to let him sing in their video.
Modern equipment is incredibly versatile. Sometimes a Swiss army knife unit can take the place of several other pieces of your gear arsenal. If you have something else that does the job just as well, why bother keeping both?
For example, in Spotify for Artists, you can see detailed stats for your top 200 songs. You can filter by date range to see whether certain promotional efforts or live shows have correlated with your Spotify activity. You can also track the total streams and listeners of all of your tracks, combined (but note that this “all-time” graph can only go as far back as 2015).
Focus: Finish this track, and begin to develop a live performance setup around it.
Your mentor will then take the results of that phone call and put them into a personalized Learning Plan (LP) — and yes, we do get a kick out of calling it an LP, thank you very much. This includes your big-picture goals and activities that you plan to work towards in your four-week session. Your LP may evolve during the session, but it’s intended to provide an initial roadmap to ensure you’re on the same page with your mentor.
Some examples of past sessions include adding production magic to your tracks, arranging and finishing musical ideas, producing an EP, or getting help building an audience for your music. We’ll find you a Soundfly Mentor specifically suited to your project who will work with you to figure out what it takes to get it done. Just tell us a little bit about yourself to be matched with a mentor right away.
Do you have a two-minute number that somehow feels like it’s dragging on without going anywhere? Maybe you need to add a bridge. Does the move from your verse to your chorus feel overly sudden, leaving things disjointed? Consider using a pre-chorus to ease that transition. Do you want a place for the audience to clap along? Sometimes doubling up the last chorus can accomplish that nicely.
