“Mona Lisa”: Um, this is 2018, guys, ain’t fooling me, there’s about to be some serious feelings going on. What is fooling me, though, is what to call the repeated lyrical hooks — there isn’t much here to grab onto: just a two-bar refrain or chorus, with an “I be with b*tches” motif that doesn’t fall in the same place relative to anything else in these epic story verses. So, yeah, I’m left with nothing solid to call them. Other than that, we’ve got an empty-bar tag before Kendrick’s verse to point out, which Lil Wayne soon takes back, gushing more feelings than any of all these 2018 “feelings” songs.

That said, Hein makes a great point that often the debate is not about current technology versus better technology. Rather, it’s a question of using technology either to achieve a result or to achieve nothing. He says, “If you’re some freshman in music school, usually the choice is not ‘shall I have a live string quartet play this or shall I have it be fake strings in Sibelius?’ No. It’s fake strings in Sibelius or nothing. And certainly when they get out of music school it’s fake strings or nothing.” So, having technology be there to help us along doesn’t take anything away, it enables us to do more. The role of education needs to be to empower students to make the most out of what’s available and not to mistake technology’s comforts for their own creative acumen.

Krumhansl proposed that we’ve heard enough songs in major keys to be able to pick up on what songs in major do, and how they should sound. Just like when you watch enough spy movies, you can basically predict what’s supposed to happen in the spy movie you’re about to watch. Cui says, “I’m assuming that most people hearing ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ would know that it’s in major even though they might not know it’s called major.”

Sam: Working with Barry was such a wonderful experience. He was always friendly and confident, never shying away from criticism or feedback. While his work in the beginning of the course was impressive, his final piece showed tremendous progress, and I couldn’t be more proud of the work he did during our time together.

Sammy Hakim is an up-and-coming young songwriter based in New York City. In May, 2018 she graduated from Berklee College of Music with a Major in songwriting and a focus in music business. These days she spends most of her time in songwriting sessions with artists all over the country.

I’ll let you in on an industry secret: Most voiceovers you hear on adverts, movies, and TV shows have been recorded by a pro voiceover talent from their home. How do I know this? Because I’ve personally set up a substantial amount of the country’s top voiceover talents’ studios in New York City over the last ten years. Unless you want to build a booth in a spare room (which I would recommend but it can get pricey), it’s usually easier and cheaper to use the tools you already have.

Electric guitars are a bit more complicated. There are more parts involved when recording this instrument, such as the amplifier, the speaker cabinet, and any effects pedals — all in addition to the guitar, itself. Because of this, we’re going to focus mainly on recording electric guitars for this article.

This would also be a good place to bring up that some music theory people don’t consider two-note intervals “chords.” But my take on that whole controversy is that, when naming things, it should be taken into account how our brains ascertain tonal information based on everything we’ve heard before, in all of music. It’s just something our brains do, so why deny it because we selfishly want a more tidy nomenclature?

Evan Zwisler is a NYC-based musician who is most notably known for his work with The Values as a songwriter and guitarist. He is an active member of the Brooklyn music scene, throwing fundraisers and organizing compilations for Planned Parenthood and the Anti-Violence Project. He started playing music in the underground punk scene of Shanghai with various local bands when he was in high school before going to California for college and finally moving to New York in 2012.
