And lastly, there’s more than probably a bit of synchronicity in the fact that as Brown’s album starts with “I’ll Go Crazy,” Prince’s live show inspired soundtrack album Purple Rain starts with a raucous, no holds barred version of his “Let’s Go Crazy.”
Its influence can be heard across all sorts delay effects and pedals today. The combination of reverb and tone controls to the echo/delay is an almost universal feature now and yet the sound design always seems reminiscent of the RE-201. The earlier delay devices are often seen as collector’s items, but because of how difficult they are to use and how fragile they are it’s rare to see a working one in someone studio.

As you near the end of your mixing work, keep mastering in mind and start considering what mastering can and cannot do to help finish the sound. Remember that mastering is only the work done on the combined stereo (or multi-channel surround) audio file. When we say that a piece of music is in a particular key, it means that it’s leaving out some of the notes. Bach’s chaconne is in D minor, so it only uses the notes D, E, F, G, A, B♭, and C. (And sometimes C# to add some drama to the chords.) That’s a more manageable number of notes to keep track of in your head. Also, they’re all related in a variety of nifty, simple mathematical ways. In D minor, you usually avoid using the notes E♭, G♭, A♭, and B. Those notes sound “wrong,” or in music theory terms, dissonant.
